Trek Highlights

Hampta Pass Trek takes us over the majestic foothills of the Himalayas, the Pir Panjal Range, crossing at Hampta Pass (14100 ft.) First reach Manali, drive to Prini.

A pleasant meadow between high bluffs, just above the tree line: common to see a couple of Gujjar encampments there. Stay at beautiful campsite in Chhika.

The trail comes steep incline till the pass on ice, snow, along glacial lakes and rocky valley. After the incline and reaching over the Hampta pass (4227m.),

As we reach the camp one can have a hot cup of tea at his lounge. We will halt a night in the tents at Balu Ka gera.

Hampta Pass Trek is a moderate trek with a scope for varying the duration to suit ones time. You start the trek in thick forest and then enter in open valleys with lush green cover of grass then the tree line stops and you cross to Hampta Pass and enter the barren landscape of Lahaul & Spiti and visit to Chandratal lake is icing on the cake. Hampta Pass Trek takes us over the majestic foothills of the Himalayas, the Pir Panjal Range, crossing at Hampta Pass (14100 ft.) First reach Manali, drive to Prini. Trek starts through Prini village, ascending to Jobdi nala via taxi. The road offers extensive view of the Kullu valley.

 

Easy walk of two hour to the campsite just after the road head. The trail begins by flat from Jobri nala to Chhika walking through the forest of Mapple, Silver Fir, Pine and Oak, paved by the grass and stone and fields of the wild flowers. One can have à cup of tea in a small teahouse on the way, which will refresh you. A gentle ascending walk of an hour ends at the first days camp site- Chhika(3500m.). A pleasant meadow between high bluffs, just above the tree line: common to see a couple of Gujjar encampments there. Stay at beautiful campsite in Chhika. As we start on the following day, after an hour we once have to cross the river than hiking through zigzag uphill on snow and moraines brings you to the Balu ka Gera camp site after full day trek.

Balu ka ghera offers magnificent evening and twilight views that one cannot forget. High altitude valley often have great lights in the evening and mornings. Next day the trail begins to ascend towards the mighty Hampta pass from Balu ka Gera. As we go higher to 4000m. the oxygen level starts to decrease and weather can cause any situation. The trail comes steep incline till the pass on ice, snow, along glacial lakes and rocky valley. After the incline and reaching over the Hampta pass (4227m.), one can enjoy the view of magnificent Himalayan peaks, Deo Tibba, Indra Asan, Indra Kila. The view of the north Lahoul and Spiti is Amazing. 2000 feet straight below is the Hampta stream, emerging from the Hampta glacier to the east and flowing north wards to the Chandra valley.

 

After spending quality time at the pass we climb back via same route to the campsite at Balu ka Gera. As we reach the camp one can have a hot cup of tea at his lounge. We will halt a night in the tents at Balu Ka gera. Next morning wake up early and have breakfast, then start trekking down towards road head. We will trek the same route via Juara Nala, Chhika and then by vehicle till Manali.

Day 1: Drive from Manali (6,000 ft) – Jobra than  trek to Chika (1,0100 ft).

We will meet at Manali Bus stand at SBI ATM on Mall Road Manali opposite Chopstick Restaurant after brief introduction we will drive from Manali (6725 ft) to Jobri.  Drive from Manali to Jobri goes through Prini Village and AD Hydro Project road and takes around one and half hour. After briefing session we start our trek to Chika (10400 ft) our today’s camp.Today’s trek is a 2 hour easy ascent from 9700 ft to 10,400 ft through thick forest and crossing small bridge. While trekking we can see the Rani river on one side and a big rocky hill on the other. The trek passes through some of the most spectacular landscape. Overnight camp at Chika.

Day 2 : Chika (10,100 ft) – Balu ka Gera (11,900 ft) .5 hrs easy ascent.

The Second day trek is a gradual ascent. While trekking we will be able to see the spectacular Dhauladhar range in the background and Indrasan peak in front. Starting part of the trek fairly gradual and as you cross the waterfall the gradient increases till Jwara Nalah. The best part of today’s trek that we have to cross two rivers one at the start just near to Chikka Campsite and other at Jwara Nala. River crossing the Jwara Nalah is exhilarating experience. You have to remove your shoes and get into knee depth of ice chilling water after crossing it you will feel what is called numbness due to extreme cold. We will have our packed lunch after crossing the Jwara nala.

Day 3: Balu ka Gera (11,900 ft) – Siagoru (12,900 ft) Crossing Hampta Pass (14,100 ft).

This is the most spectacular part of the trek as we cross the Hampta Pass and then descend to our camp site in Siagoru. From Hampta Pass you can see the Indrasan Peak and its gigantic glacier.Today’s trek will take us approximately 8hrs to reach Siagoru. The ascent on this part of the Hampta Pass trek will be moderate.

Day 4: Siagoru (12,900 ft)– Chatru (11,000 ft) 4 hrs. Drive to Chandratal Lake.

This day we have an easy descent through the Hampta Valley. The massive mountains of the Pir Panjal and Spiti ranges dominate the entire landscape during the Hampta Pass Trek till the camp site at Chatru. Chatru is a confluence point of paths from Rohtang Pass, Hamta Pass and Lahaul & Spiti. From Chatru if road and weather condition permit we head to the Chandra Tal and camp at suitable place according to the conditions. The distance from Chatru to Chandratal Lake is around 41 Kms and takes around 2 hours to reach due to road conditions. This drive from Chatru to Chandratal Lake you will remember for your life.

Day 5:  Drive from Chandra tal/Chatru  to Manali via the Rohtang Pass

In the morning after breakfast we leave for Manali via the Rohtang Pass. We will be stopping at Rohtang pass for few minutes but we are sure that nobody would want to pollute the beautiful memories of the trek. Enroute we will be stopping for lunch at Marhi and continue our drive to Manali.  Our  wonderful experience of trekking in Himachal ends.

Packing Refuge Based Keep it simple and minimal “A heavy pack is a pack filled with anxiety.” Freud.Keeping your pack weight to a minimum is the key to a successful trek. We recommend people joining any of our treks where you will be sleeping in gites (hostels) or refuges be equipped with the following:

 

Technical equipment Comfortable walking boots or shoes (3 or 4 season)

Walking poles (definitely two) Clothing suggestions

Fleece Waterproof jacket (or big plastic poncho)

Waterproof over trousers

Lightweight puffer jacket for evening comfort in the higher refuges

Warm gloves and hat (for early starts)

Sun hat or peaked cap

Sunglasses

One pair shorts

One pair lightweight walking trousers

Two T-shirts

Good quality walking socks

Other essential items

40 – 60 litre Rucksack

Light weight towel

Waterproof ruck sack cover or waterproof bags to keep your things dry

Sun block for face and lips (Factor 50)

Personal First Aid kit (plasters, Compeed for blisters, paracetamol)

Roll of toilet paper

Water bottle or Platypus type hydration system – 1.5 to 2 litres

Penknife

Head torch for use in refuges

Survival blanket (light foil blanket to keep injured people warm).

Optional items Change of clothing to include:

underwear, tracksuit bottoms, dry shirt, spare socks (think of things that you can wear to both dinner and bed so you don’t need to change)

Camera Paperback novel (light!)

Snack bars/dried fruit/chocolate

Waterproof map case

Ear plugs (there will inevitably be snorers in the refuge)

Buff – good for blocking out light and noise while sleeping, keeping your neck warm, holding your hair etc.

Day 1: Drive from Manali (6,000 ft) – Jobra than  trek to Chika (1,0100 ft).

Day 2 : Chika (10,100 ft) – Balu ka Gera (11,900 ft) .5 hrs easy ascent.

Day 3: Balu ka Gera (11,900 ft) – Siagoru (12,900 ft) Crossing Hampta Pass (14,100 ft).

Day 4: Siagoru (12,900 ft)– Chatru (11,000 ft) 4 hrs. Drive to Chandratal Lake.

Day 5:  Drive from Chandra tal/Chatru  to Manali via the Rohtang Pass

Cancellation Policy

If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 25% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees. If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees. If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
