➩ Description

Hampta Pass in Himachal Pradesh is one of the amazing, dramatic, and unusual route crossings that can be found in the Himalayas. The pass has an elevation of 14,000 feet. On the one hand is the verdant valley of Kullu, which is lined on each side of the path by grasslands, forests, and flowering meadows. On the other side, you will discover the plains of Lahaul to be nearly completely devoid of life, in addition to mountain ranges that are arid and devoid of flora. The view in front of you and the view behind you are completely different when you are standing on the peak of the hill. The perspective shifts after just a few minutes have passed. To summarise it in the simplest terms possible, the Hampta Pass is like Himachal Pradesh’s version of the Valley of Flowers. The landscape has a remarkable resemblance to that of the Valley of Flowers, consisting of a large, verdant valley that is encircled on all sides by snow-capped mountains; yet, there is more to the area. As soon as you make it to the other side of Hampta Pass, you’ll be astounded by the striking difference in scenery between where you came from and where you are now. Spiti Valley is recognised for its desolate environment, steep terrain, and forget-me-not blue sky; this region will be known as Spiti Valley after it is built over the valley. The factor that causes the drastic shifts to become even more intense, even more so than the pure excitement of the ascent up to Hampta Pass is. The journey to Hampta Pass is an

Distance: 2kms trek

Time: 2 hrs drive and 45min trek

At eleven o'clock in the morning, everyone in the group will meet at the location where they will be picked up, and there, the leader of the hike will provide a briefing during which he or she will go over all of the important information about the hike. After that, we will make our way to Jobra, which is the starting point for the hike to Hampta Pass and is situated at an elevation of 2,939 metres (9,379 feet). Although though there are numerous hairpin curves on the road on the trip from Manali, it is still considered to be a picturesque drive because of the expansive vista of Kullu Valley that you get to get a peek of. We will arrive at Jobra after making our way through some really dense woods that are filled with pine, maple, and silver birch trees. After a little period of rest, we will set off on our journey towards Chika. During hiking, one is afforded the opportunity to see a scene that is both peaceful and invigorating. To say that the terrain that the hiking path passes through is gorgeous would be an understatement. The trail passes through lush green woods that are made up of maple, oak, and deodar trees, as well as meadows that are crossed by the Rani Nallah stream. Chika will serve as our base of operations. It is the ideal place to spend tranquil moments because to the expansive flora that covers the area and the clear sky that can be seen above. In the evening, we will have dinner, and then we will spend the night in Chika.

Distance: 9Kms

Time: 7 hours approx

We shall have breakfast first thing in the morning, and then we will go to Balu Ka Ghera. The word "Balu" means "sand," and the route certainly lives up to its name. After a brief stroll across the meadow, the terrain quickly changes to consist of boulders and loose pebbles, elevating this section of the journey to the more difficult category. The splendour of this hike lies in the fact that it affords participants the opportunity to experience the enchantment of nature firsthand in the form of breathtaking vistas. On the one side, you have the fast-moving Jwara river that seems to be following in your footsteps, while on the other hand, the majestic Dhauladhar mountains call you to come closer. In the middle of the verdant canopies, a waterfall's cascading stream would be waiting. As you approach the beginning of Balu ka Ghera, often referred to as Chota Balu ka Ghera, the landscape will have begun to become more level. As you continue to go forward, the landscape will start to get more rocky, with the rocks being farther apart from one another, making it more difficult to navigate through. Soon, we will arrive at Balu Ka Ghera, where we will pitch up camp amid the mountains. The Hampta pass will be waiting for us beyond those mountains. We will have supper together in the evening, and then spend the night under the twinkling stars.

Distance: 7Kms

Time: 11hrs approx

After breakfast, we will make our way to Sia Goru, which is the location of our next camping spot. The whole path is made up of stones, making the descent more difficult and highlighting the need of our vigilance in this situation. During the way, we will be passing via Hampta Pass, which is a breathtaking path that has a river running through the middle of it. Along the bank, there are blooming flowers in a rainbow of hues, making it a beautiful sight to see. You will also get the opportunity to witness the peak of Deo Tibba drawing you in closer. After our time spent taking in the scenery above Hampta Pass, we will set off on our descent. The terrain on the route heading downward is composed of slick dirt and loose stones. You will go to the valley below along a path that winds and turns, and after some time of walking, you will eventually reach the bottom of the mountain. The gap that suddenly appears in front of you leads to Sia Goru, which is where we will set up camp for the night, and the rest of the day will be spent at your leisure. The evening will begin with dinner, and then the guests will retire for the night in Sia Goru.

Distance: 7Kms

Time: 5hrs approx

After a leisurely breakfast in the wee hours of the morning, we will set off on the descent to Chatru. The huge region is devoid of flora, yet the treacherous slopes will provide you with the surge of adrenaline that you may be looking for. Since the descent is challenging, you may need to maintain an increased level of vigilance. After we have arrived in Chatru, we will get in the car and go for Chandratal, a stunning lake that is around 45 kilometres away from the campground. But, in order to make the travel, we would need to have favourable weather since we anticipate that the current weather conditions would be challenging. After taking in the breathtaking sites along the way and appreciating the splendour of the natural world, we will make our way back to Chatru to establish our base camp there. In the evening, we will have dinner, and then we will spend the night in Chatru.

Distance: 85Kms

Time: 7hrs approx

We shall begin our return trip and travel from Chatru to Manali after having some tea and breakfast quite early in the morning. The breathtaking sights throughout the picturesque drive include the majesty of the surrounding mountains and the flow of the Chandra river. In addition to this, you get to drive through the iconic Atal Tunnel, which in and of itself makes the journey immensely satisfying. After arriving in Manali, the party will happen and go their own ways, taking with them many happy memories.

As you climb to higher altitudes, the air grows thinner and less oxygen is present. The amount of oxygen in our blood is equivalent to the proportion of haemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen. At altitudes above around 2,100 metres (7,000 feet), the amount of oxygen carried by our blood starts to decrease. At the same time, the human body possesses both immediate and long-term adaptations to altitude that help it somewhat compensate for the shortage of oxygen.

➩ FAQ's

Trekking through the Hampta Pass may be done at any time of the year since it is not dependent on the weather. The months beginning in the middle of June and ending in September provide the best opportunity to fully appreciate every step of the journey. During this time period, the temperature will range from 13 to 18 degrees Celsius on average during the day, and it will drop to a low of 0 degrees Celsius at night. This will occur during the winter season.

The temperature continues to fall throughout the month of October. The snow conditions in June are the reason why hikers consider June to be a particularly memorable month for Hampta Pass. As a result, a great number of people who are enthusiastic about experiencing new things have suggested that the middle of June is the ideal time to undertake an exciting hike to Hampta Pass.

Over the course of the walk, you should maintain the following people's contact information close to hand in case any unexpected problems arise.

- Police- 100

- Ambulance/medical- 102/108

- Fire- 101

- Disaster management- 1077/1070

- Disaster management control room- 0177-2812344

The difficulty level of the walk across Hampta Pass is not particularly high; rather, it is of a moderate level. Trekkers who already have some experience will find it to their liking, while those who are just starting out may find it to be extremely difficult. In a perfect world, all the expertise one could need to cross Hampta Pass would have been gained on either one or two previous hikes to lower altitude routes.

The walk brings hikers to an elevation that is 1,530 metres higher in only two to three days, making the risk of developing altitude sickness quite significant. Maintaining proper hydration during this trip is of the highest significance in the prevention of acute mountain sickness. The very steep descent from Shea Goru to Chatru has the potential to make some hikers feel sick to their stomachs.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the route leading to Chandratal, which is going to take around three hours in a vehicle to go, is quite dusty. Asthmatic patients may have complications as a result of this, thus it is essential for them to take additional measures, such as wearing an anti-dust 5 ply mask to prevent breathing in the dust and keeping their inhalers close at hand.

It is possible to go to Manali, the bustling tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh, from a number of significant cities in India. Bhuntar is home to the closest airport, and Joginder Nagar Train Station is where passengers may board trains heading in that direction. Nevertheless, arriving at the Chandigarh airport and then taking a bus or a taxi to Manali is the method that is recommended as the most convenient way to get to Manali.

The journey into Hampta Valley begins at Jobra, which is reachable by taxi from Manali and serves as the starting point for the trip. They are shared taxis, and the cost of the journey, which is around USD 34 (INR 2500), is supposed to be split equally among all of the passengers.

After three days of hiking from Jobra, one may reach the Hampta Pass and go on to the next destination. At the conclusion of the fifth day, the hikers make their way back to Manali, where they spend the night before continuing on to either their original destinations or connecting destinations through the Chandigarh or Ambala railway stations, or the Chandigarh airport.

The majority of the way to Hampta follows a well-marked and spacious path that is broad enough to accommodate all of the hikers who are making their way there. Having said that, the walk is not without its share of potential dangers and hazards. In the event that glaciers continue to melt during the months of July, August, and September, there may be many stream crossings along the path leading to Jwara and Chatru. The crossing of the creek requires extreme caution due to the possibility that the slick rocks that you are walking on may give way. That is the perfect situation for constructing a human chain by connecting elbows and crossing together in order to prevent any mishaps.

If the hiker has not yet reached the pass, they must retrace their steps all the way back to Jobra, and if they have already reached the pass, they must continue on the trail all the way to Chatru. There are no exit points along the trail in the event that a hiker is forced to abandon their journey due to an unexpected event. Taxis may be flagged down at any of these two locations and taken to the Mission Hospital, which is Manali's closest medical facility.

On the Hampta path, you are free to walk by yourself if you so want. Nevertheless, only experienced hikers should do this, since it might become difficult to identify the correct route when it vanishes for a bit at Balu ka Ghera and the top of the pass. Only experienced hikers should attempt this. Alone hiking may be dangerous in the event of an emergency since the only way to get assistance is to wait for another hiker or a group to pass by.

The beginning of the trail to the Hampta Pass is located at Jobra, which can be reached by automobile from Manali. If the snow melts towards the end of June, visitors may be able to drive all the way to Chika, which is located two kilometres from Jobra. Nevertheless, beyond that point, automobiles are not allowed to proceed; the path leading up to the pass itself is reserved only for hikers.
